The city council, through its Fire Brigade Department, has embarked on flood awareness campaigns to educate residents in the city on how to handle flooding.
Targeted areas for the campaigns include Ward 12, 22, 25 and 26.
The city council’s senior public relations officer Mrs Nesisa Mpofu said residents were being advised to clear their drains so that water could flow during heavy rains.
“Members of the public should clear their drains and stop putting rubbish on their storm water drains as this is very dangerous. They should make sure that their pre-cast walls have openings to let out water,” said Mrs Mpofu.
She said the campaign would continue in the targeted areas up to 21 December and urged people to phone the Fire Brigade whenever they faced problems.
Meanwhile, the city chief fire officer Mr Richard Peterson said the campaigns were aimed at informing residents on how to behave during heavy rains and floods.
“The campaigns are targeting the residents that have houses prone to flooding especially those with roofing defects,” said Mr Peterson.
“In case of flooding, people should switch off all electrical gadgets. They must vacate such houses and make sure children, the disabled, elderly and sick are accounted for all the time.”
He said people should ensure that they use quality material in building their houses.
This week the city received heavy rains that destroyed properties and uprooted trees in Lobengula West, Luveve and Gwabalanda.
