The City of Bulawayo has proposed a new braai policy that will prohibit the use of firewood at commercial braai spots, while compelling operators to register with council and comply with strict health, fire safety and infrastructure regulations.
Under the proposed policy, only gas, electrical grills and charcoal will be permitted as fuel sources for braai stands, with the use of firewood and fire accelerants set to be banned.
The local authority says the proposed regulations are aimed at protecting public health, improving food safety standards and reducing environmental and fire hazards associated with the growing number of braaiing activities across the city.
According to the draft policy prepared by the Health Services Department, all braai operators will be required to obtain council approvals, including town planning clearance, approved building plans, fire clearance and occupation certificates before commencing operations.
