THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) says it fully supports the return of the iconic Bulawayo Half-Marathon.
Set to take place on April 19, 2025, the much-awaited event marks the revival of a race that was last held in 2005, carrying the city’s name and legacy through the streets of Bulawayo.
The journey to the marathon’s comeback began with a formal request from event organisers and veteran administrator Themba Mhlophe to use White City Stadium.
According to the latest council minutes, the event has received a go ahead from council.
“There were no objections in principle to the application as this would be a significant event that would improve sporting visibility in the city,” read the council minutes.
To support this monumental event, BCC approved the use of key venues and extended its full backing.
The marathon itself will start and finish at White City Stadium on April 19, 2025.
Participants will compete in three categories: the 21km, 10km, and 5km races, with entry fees pegged at US$15. Registration opened on January 15, 2025, and closes on April 15, 2025, offering athletes ample time to sign up.
Late registration will also be available at White City Stadium from April 16 to 18.
The Council said the event has been approved on condition the organisers meet certain requirements. The local authority wrote to the organisers advising them to seek police clearance, manage traffic flow, and ensure crowd control to guarantee the safety of athletes and spectators.
The organisers are required to indemnify the Council against any damages to property or injuries during the event and must ensure that all risks are mitigated. — @innocentskizoe
