In a bold and ambitious move to revolutionise the sporting landscape of Zimbabwe, Beach Soccer Zimbabwe (BSZ) has unveiled a ground breaking plan to introduce beach soccer at primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary institutions across the country.
The initiative, which aims to nurture talent from grassroots levels, is being hailed as a game-changer for the sport, which has been steadily gaining popularity in recent years.
The plan, however, comes with a significant challenge: the need for dedicated beach soccer pitches nationwide. Unlike traditional football, beach soccer is played on sand, requiring specialised facilities that are scarce in Zimbabwe. BSZ is now calling for collaboration with government bodies, private investors, and local communities to develop the necessary infrastructure to support the sport’s growth.
Vincent Chawonza, BSZ Vice President for Development and Governance, emphasised the importance of the initiative in an exclusive interview.
“This is not just about introducing a new sport; it’s about creating opportunities for young people to express themselves, stay active, and potentially represent Zimbabwe on the international stage,” Chawonza said.
“Beach soccer is fast-paced, exciting, and accessible. By integrating it into schools and colleges, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for the sport and for our youth.”
Chris Nhapi, BSZ Board Member for Technical and Development, echoed Chawonza’s sentiments, highlighting the technical benefits of the sport.
“Beach soccer is a fantastic tool for developing agility, ball control, and tactical awareness. It complements traditional football and offers a unique pathway for players to hone their skills. Our goal is to identify and nurture talent early, ensuring that Zimbabwe becomes a competitive force in the global beach soccer community,” Nhapi explained.
The plan is set to roll out in phases, with pilot programmes in select schools and tertiary institutions expected to begin within the next year. BSZ is also working on training programmes for coaches and referees to ensure the sport is taught to the highest standards.
The ambitious project has already garnered support from sports enthusiasts and educators, who see it as a way to diversify Zimbabwe’s sporting offerings and provide new avenues for youth engagement.
