THE Bulawayo Volleyball Association (BVA) has launched a beach volleyball series to expand the version of the sport.
BVA chairperson, William Mazviro said after realisation that they had been achieving incremental success in beach volleyball they are putting more focus on that version with more games being played.
He said they have created a beach volleyball series that will see certain weekends being reserved for the different form of the sport with all teams taking part.
“We are the first province to introduce the beach volleyball series and we are aiming at further developing players in the sport while achieving some gains. After being selected for national colours the players have done pretty well in regional competitions.
“Other countries within Southern Africa such as Mozambique and South Africa have been doing well, leading us to believe we should develop that variation of the sport,” he said.
Mazviro said players such as Nigel Kagowa, Proceed Mkhonto, Rosemary Ncube and Moketsi Jamba had performed well after national call-ups.
He said since Zimbabwe did not have beaches they are playing in improvised courts, whereby they bring the sand used for beach volleyball, adding they would need a larger space for them to construct permanent courts.
Mazviro said they have already applied to Bulawayo City Council for land to build courts which will be used for beach volleyball and beach soccer.
“For the time being we are using improvised courts where we bring sand or where we have teams that are close to rivers they set up courts along appropriate places on the river banks,” he said.
The main difference between beach volleyball and indoor (hard surface) are court sizes, balls, number of players and the scoring.
