Port Elizabeth.
Zimbabwe were the winners in the women’s section and the men’s team came second in the event that featured teams from South Africa and Namibia.
The tournament is slated for November 3 and the local teams will be hoping to continue with their good performance in Namibia.
National beach volleyball teams coach, Robert Njerere said they have begun training at Highfields Community Hall in preparation for the competition, however, the teams will be trimmed down at the weekend.
“After South Africa, we have been invited to Namibia for an invitational open tournament. We are looking at sending four teams — two men and two women. We are training today and on Friday and the final selection of the teams will be on the weekend,” said Njerere.
Njerere said the tournaments are a good platform for them to prepare the teams for the Zone Six championships as well as the All Africa Championships qualifiers starting early next year.
“Next year we have got a tight calendar. We have got the Continental Cup qualifiers starting next year.
“The dates have not yet been set but usually the first stage starts between February and March while the second round runs from April to June and the third round start in September to October.
“Apart we are trying to go and defend our title we won at the Namibia Open held two months ago. There is also the Zone Six that are supposed to be held between October and January, the guys from the zone are going to meet and come up with the dates.
“I think we are looking at consolidating our dominance so far. Recently we won in South Africa.
“Our hope is to try and get most of our teams winning in Namibia,” said Njerere.
The national teams’ coach said they are looking forward to competitive event.
“There are several other countries that have indicated that they are coming. From the communication I had from the volleyball president in Namibia, South Africa have expressed interest as well as Namibia but we don’t know if they will make it for the tournament.
“We are also running around to see that the funds are in place,” said Njerere.
