‘Beautiful show, but more inclusivity needed’

MODELLING guru Sipho Mazibuko has praised organisers of the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) for staging a polished show at the Harare International Conference Centre on Saturday night, but says more can be done to broaden representation.

Mazibuko, who was among those who attended the event, described the ceremony as well organised and commended the new event planners, Events Evolution and Scarlet Studios, for delivering a seamless live production.

“The Namas were beautiful — we all start somewhere. The new planners did well. It was a well put out show with no gaps in between, especially for a live event. That shows they mean business,” she said.
She welcomed the introduction of fashion as a category, which saw Harare-based designers Ishmael Tsakatsa of the Zargue’sia brand, Danayi Madondo of Haus of Stone, and Joyce Chimanye of Zuvva being honoured. She said it was refreshing to see the fashion industry recognised after 24 years of the awards’ existence.
“I was happy for everyone who won, especially those from the Matabeleland region. It showed that our arts is being recognised and we’re headed somewhere,” she said.

However, Mazibuko urged organisers to ensure broader provincial representation.

“My advice to event organisers is that next year, they should include presenters from other provinces, not just Harare. It’s important for inclusivity,” she said.

The awards were steered by renowned Harare-based radio personalities, Merciless, KVG and Phathisani, who anchored the main ceremony. They were supported by Yahya Goodvibes, also, from the capital.

Representation from outside Harare was largely confined to the red carpet, where Bulawayo presenter Taboka Nleya was among the hosts, something that Mazibuko feels needs to change.

She also called for the introduction of an Outstanding Model category as part of the fashion segment.

“What are designers without models? Who wears and markets those designs? It’s not fair to skip models because they play a critical role in the industry,” she added.

However, on the main stage, organisers deserve credit for assembling a diverse line-up that included artistes from outside Harare. Bulawayo musicians Fab G Mshanakagogo, Sku and Snowy were part of the entertainment roster. Even so, more can be done to widen provincial representation, with calls growing for talent from other regions to also be afforded space on such a national platform. —@mthabisi_mthire
