Andy Brown ordered to pay US$150 for child’s upkeep

Musician Andy Brown was yesterday ordered to pay US$150 per month towards the upkeep of a child he sired out of wedlock.
Brown, who last paid maintenance for the child during the Zimbabwe dollar era, had the monthly figure adjusted to foreign currency following a successful application to that end by ex-lover Fadila Fazilahmed.
Harare magistrate Mrs Rekina Dzikiti granted the order after both parties consented.
Brown shall pay US$150 per month towards the upkeep of his son with effect from the end of February.
In her maintenance claim papers, Fazilahmed said the musician had only given her money for school fees a few times and then stopped.
She wanted the court to order that the maintenance be paid in United States dollars.
Last week the matter was postponed to enable Brown’s lawyers to be present during the court proceedings.
Fazilahmed had opposed the application for postponement, stating that she did not have enough bus fare for travel from Kariba to Harare for the matter.
The defence team undertook to pay her transport bills.
In March 2005, the musician was arrested for failing to appear in court for the same matter and was remanded in custody to April 27, 2005.
In February last year, Brown was fined US$100 for beating up the same woman over a misunderstanding over upkeep of their son.
