FORGET gold, Zimbabwe is buzzing with a new treasure — honey! As the world marks World Bee Day today, Zimbabwe is joining the global hive in celebrating the tiny pollinators that keep our plates full and ecosystems thriving.

World Bee Day, commemorated every May 20 by the United Nations, shines a spotlight on the critical role bees play in food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. This year’s theme, “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All,” is a call to action and Zimbabwe is answering loud and clear.

Welcome Bhila, director of Bee’s Honey Company, is leading the charge with an ambitious project that could transform Zimbabwe into Africa’s honey capital.
“In Zimbabwe, beekeepers are warming up to global trends and developing programmes to raise awareness among communities and stakeholders,” Bhila told B-Metro.

He announced the upcoming MUTSA (Mutually Supporting the Apiculture Industry) programme — a game-changing initiative aimed at:
* Training 1 million beekeepers
* Distributing 3 million beehives
* Planting 1 million bee-friendly trees
* Producing 100 tonnes of honey
“This isn’t just about honey. It’s about jobs, food security, and giving rural communities a sustainable source of income,” said Bhila.

Running under the sub-theme “The Nectar of Teamwork,” the MUTSA program is drawing support from local banks, government ministries, and community stakeholders. It’s a bold move expected to sweeten Zimbabwe’s economy while boosting biodiversity.

As the bees buzz, Zimbabwe’s beekeeping revolution is just beginning and the honey pots are getting ready to overflow!
