HARARE was left stunned on Friday after a teenage allegedly tried to sell a human foetus to a passer-by, claiming it was beef!
According to a police report, 19-year-old Stelly Marecha was arrested after he was caught in possession of a foetus wrapped in a black plastic bag, which he had reportedly picked from a bin at Corner Mbuya Nehanda and Albion Streets in Harare’s CBD.
“The suspect allegedly picked a human foetus which was wrapped in a black plastic bag in a bin,” said police in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“He attempted to sell the remains to a 27-year-old man, claiming that it was beef.”
Shocked pedestrians and vendors who witnessed the drama say the suspect was calmly offering his gruesome “meat” to random people before someone alerted authorities.
Police confirmed Marecha’s arrest and said investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the remains.
“The ZRP is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of the suspect responsible for disposing of the foetus,” read the statement.
The grim case has reignited debates around illegal abortions, mental health, and street crime in Zimbabwe’s capital.
Meanwhile, Marecha is expected to face charges of violating a corpse, a crime that carries stiff penalties under Zimbabwean law.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station.
