The incident occurred along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road on Saturday where a Hino Dutro truck towing a trailer loaded with undeclared alcoholic beverages, energy drinks and crisps was intercepted.

In a statement, Zimra said the truck driver was unable to provide the necessary importation documents and was subsequently instructed to proceed to the border under police escort.

“As the truck was being escorted to the border, a Toyota Hilux vehicle aggressively approached the convoy, causing a disturbance.

“Several individuals involved in the incident were arrested, including the truck driver who tried to flee,” said Zimra.
“The vehicle owner later arrived and apologised for the incident and was allowed to repair the damaged truck before being escorted to the border for further customs processing.

“Zimra and law enforcement officials seized the smuggled goods, which included popular brands like Red Bull, Dragon, Hello, Detroi, Belgravia Gin, Brutal Fruit and Corona Extra.”

Zimra said the total estimated value of the seized goods was over R150 000 and urged traders to comply with customs regulations and use formal ports of entry to avoid penalties and fines.

The revenue authority has also implemented and enhanced surveillance measures, including the deployment of drones, to combat smuggling activities.
