Beitbridge businessman shoots wife dead, commits suicide

Thupeyo Muleya, Beitbridge Bureau

A dark cloud hangs over Beitbridge after a popular businessman, Mr Farai Longwe, commonly known as Mr Grocery, shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in the Tshidixwa suburb on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred just before midnight when Longwe, who runs a chain of grocery shops in the western suburbs, had locked himself in the bedroom with his wife.

The motive behind the murder-suicide is yet to be established.
Beitbridge district police officer commanding Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube said investigations into the matter are ongoing.

“We have deployed a special team of detectives to the ground and I am yet to get full details. We will advise on further details at a later stage,” said Chief Supt Ncube.

Sources close to the incident said the matter was reported to the police by the landlord, who heard gunshots from Longwe’s bedroom.
