Beitbridge RDC starts road rehabilitation

The Beitbridge Rural District Council (BBRDC) has begun rehabilitating and reconstructing major roads that were damaged by heavy rains recently.

In addition, they are also addressing those that are succumbing to wear and tear.

BBRDC’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Ncube, said in an interview on Wednesday that workers were already on the ground.

He said most roads had become impassable, hence the need to urgently restore them.

“We have started repairing bad roads, and in some areas, we will create new links to improve service delivery,” said Mr Ncube.

“In Beitbridge East, we are already working on the road that links Dumba and Dite, which had been badly damaged by heavy rains.

Under Beitbridge West, our team is working on the Sentinel-Shashe road, where we have already deployed a grader, tractor, front-end loader, and manpower.”

The road rehabilitation and maintenance had been delayed due to a number of procurement processes.

He said they had also secured a partner to rehabilitate the Mutetenwa (Mtetengwe) to Benfar road, where civil works were expected to start soon.

In some instances, he said, they would construct the roads, and others would be maintained to ensure they remain accessible.

Some of the roads requiring rehabilitation include those linking the town with Zezani, Hwunga, Dumba, Chiredzi, Tshikwalakwala, Makombe, Fula, Masera, Shashe, and Nhwali.

Beitbridge East legislator, Cde Albert Nguluvhe, who toured the road project over the weekend, said he was impressed with the progress on the ground.

He said he would engage other road authorities, including the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development and the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), to repair damaged roads under their jurisdictions.
