DESPITE being known for her laid back Afro Soul tunes, South Africa-based sensation Berita Khumalo has promised to reinvent herself, starting with the single Surprises which she released this week.
Khumalo is preparing for the release of her self-titled album in April.
After working with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela on her last project, Khumalo has tried to shift her style for her upcoming album. In fact, it may have been Masekela who inspired this desire for change after he suggested last year it was time for her to make people dance with her music.
This change has manifested itself in Beritaas desire to try out new genres and collaborations.
a?Last year I did a song with a hip-hop artiste Yanga and it was something that I had never done before. I believe itas the same thing for this song. I have never done something like this before,a? she said in an interview.
She went on to explain the motivation for making the single.
a?The single was inspired by the feeling that we should find joy in the present and hope in the future. The song is about ways to enjoy and appreciate life as it is full of surprises so one should not wallow in oneas sorrow as we donat know what tomorrow will bring,a? she said.
Khumalo added that the desire for a new start in her career had been behind her desire to make a self titled album.
a?I decided to make a self titled album because I feel like there has been a lot of growth and itas time I reintroduce myself to my fans,a? she said.
