Bhasera speaks about leading youthful side

JOHANNESBURG. SuperSport United defender Onismor Bhasera has spoken about captaining the squad that has a good blend of youngsters and veterans.

The Zimbabwean defender, Bhasera took over as the skipper of the Pretoria-based club following the departure of the previous captain Ronwen Williams, who joined Mamelodi Sundowns in the previous transfer window.

Bhasera says being a leader is not something new to him as he has been practising it as a senior player behind the scenes.

The experienced left-footer says other senior players play an integral role in helping enlight the way for the youngsters.

“In terms of captaincy, it’s not something new, the difference is wearing the armband,” Bhasera said in response to FARPost.

“As a senior player, I’ve been trying to lead from behind.

“Working with the youngsters, we’ve got the likes of Bradley [Grobler] and there’s a couple of senior players, [Thamsanqa] Gabuza, Tyson [Thulani Hlatshwayo], we’re working with the youngsters.

“You need to remind them of the importance of taking care of themselves and their lifestyle.

“So far so good.” The 36-year-old has spent nearly six years at Matsatsantsa a Pitori and made over 170 appearances in all competitions.

Bhasera has won two MTN 8 titles and a Nedbank Cup so far in his stay with the SuperSport.

Asked when he is planning to walk away from the game, Bhasera was reluctant to estimate how many years he has left in his playing career.
