Billiat still to open PSL account

WITH talismanic Zimbabwean forward Khama Billiat among those still to open his goal account, Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has lamented his side’s lack of killer instinct in the final third after suffering a disappointing defeat to Cape Town City.

Billiat, who quit the Zimbabwe Warriors to focus fully on his club career, has not had the flying start many had expected of him and naturally Chiefs have been blowing hot and cold.

Cape Town City recorded their first win of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership after downing Soweto giant 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening, courtesy of goals from Darwin Gonzalez and Nathan Fasika.

Trailing by a goal at the half-time break, Chiefs were a notably improved side during the second stanza but were made to pay for a lack of composure in the final third as Fasika secured the three points for his side.

“In the middle, we had four and they had three. We played with two No. 10s and we said they must come short so that we can overload the middle and force them inside,” Amakhosi head coach Zwane told SuperSport TV after the match.

“Once they are there, we would have width because Solly [Dillan Solomons] was outside and Reeve (Frosler) was waiting for the ball but we just couldn’t connect. Several times we caught them napping but we did not punish them.

“With the final third entry, there was a time where we just needed the final pass to convert but we couldn’t. (Kgaogelo) Sekgota, I think, had one where he wanted to play a cut-pack, and (Phathutshedzo) Nange, and Khama (Billiat)…

“In the second half, Khama had four or five similar [opportunities] where they were played in the near post but unfortunately his first touch let him down. These are the things that are a work in progress but we will get it right at some point.”

Billiat and his strike partner Keegan Dolly carry the hopes of the Amakhosi faithful in Chiefs quest for honours.

Chiefs, South Africa’s most popular club, are looking to end seven years of waiting to taste success once again and they have struggled to build on their fine run in the CAF Champions League in which they reached the final in 2020 but have since changed coaches three times with Zwane being handed the reins on a permanent basis before the start of the current season.

Billiat will once again come under the spotlight when Chiefs host AmaZulu at FNB stadium on Saturday. – Online Reporter/Kickoff.com
