Binga hosts primary schools’ ball games competition

BINGA will host the Matabeleland North National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) ball games starting tomorrow. Districts in the province Lupane, Bubi, Tsholotsho, Hwange, Umguza, Nkayi and Binga will be represented by select teams. These were assembled following intense selection competitions that began at the start of the second term.

Charles Ndiweni, the Naph chairman for Matabeleland North confirmed yesterday that they would be hosting ball game championships involving selects. He said each one of the districts per sport, had managed to get the cream to compete with counterparts from elsewhere in what promises to be a good showcase of the talent the province has.

They will compete in soccer, netball, basketball and volleyball. Both genders will be involved in the chosen disciplines with hopes high that this could be the foundation of the province’s future excellence in sport.

Identified coaches from within the Naph set up will select a team to represent the province at the national championships in Kwekwe on 16 July.

“We would be selecting best students in various disciplines to represent the province at the national finals, with those excelling at national level going to the regional games for primary school,” said Ndiweni.

Ndiweni is concerned about the province’s basketball standards. Most primary schools don’t have basketball courts with Bubi District having only one.

“The shortage of basketball courts, has affected the development of sport in the province as most primary schools rely on secondary school courts, so we are appealing for assistance,” said Ndiweni.

Ndiweni praised the development of volleyball even though it has been an infant sport in the Naph competitions.

Primary schools sport is considered the foundation of any discipline in the country as elementary basics of any discipline are taught.

Naph has to be praised for training hundreds of qualified coaches to ensure that teachers impart proper training methods and skills.
