BINGA District were the first day pacesetters in the Matabeleland North National Association of Secondary Schools Heads (Nash) inter-district athletics track and field meet at Fatima High School yesterday.
The competition ends today with the province selecting its team for the national finals set for Hilcrest College in Mutare in two weeks’ time.
By lunch time yesterday, Binga District had accumulated a total of 23 medals comprising nine gold, 10 silver and four bronze.
In second place was Bubi District with 26 medals (six gold, five silver and 15 bronze). One of the silver medals came from 16-year-old Thandiwe Phiri of Somvubu Secondary School, who came second in the 17 years and under girls’ 400M hurdles.
Despite her second place finish in which she clocked 1 minute 12.60 seconds, Phiri was ecstatic about her achievement.
“I came here aiming for gold, but I’m still happy with my achievement,” said Phiri.
Luckmore Mwiinde from Binga District claimed gold in the boys’ 20 and under 10,000M in a time of 33 minutes, 05 seconds followed by Trust Moyo of Lupane District in 33 minutes, 25 seconds. Prosper Ncube of Tsholotsho District took bronze in 33 minutes 30 seconds.
Matabeleland North head-in-charge of athletics Thabani Nkomo said the provincial select will camp at George Silundika High School from next week until they leave for the nationals in Mutare.
