Adopting biogas as a source of power for domestic can be cost-effective and convenient for households, especially in light of the electricity shortages being experienced in the country.
This was said by Mukjam Energy managing director, Mr Mukudzei Mapfiro during a media tour of a biogas project in Harare yesterday.
“Biogas is an environmentally-friendly, renewable energy source produced by the breakdown of organic matter such as food scraps, municipal waste, manure, agricultural, plant and animal waste and can be used to provide electricity for domestic consumption which include cooking and heating among others,” Mr Mapfiro said.
“Apart from providing power, the by-product derived from the production of electricity from biogas can also be used to produce fertilisers to grow crops.”
The country is currently facing power shortages that have resulted in prolonged periods of load shedding.
The situation has been worsened by climate change-induced drought that has resulted in decreased power production at Kariba hydroelectric power station.
“The use of biogas is also in tandem with the Government’s policy of producing environmentally friendly electricity from renewable sources,” he said.
“Biogas is also reliable as its main raw material is animal or human waste which is readily available, unlike other sources of energy.”
The Government is promoting the use of renewable energy in light of growing calls for the reduction of the use of sources of energy that contribute to global warming and climate change.
