A 21st birthday celebration ended in tragedy after a drunken 20-year-old woman from Cowdray Park suburb drowned in a swimming pool in Killarney suburb.
Buhlebenkosi Ncube was in the company of her boyfriend and the two had booked a venue at a house in Killarney where they were celebrating the birthday party while drinking beer.

Bulawayo provincial police deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, which occurred on Sunday shortly after 2AM.
“The deceased was swimming with a group of other partygoers when she got to the deep end of the pool and drowned. Her friends unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate her before she was rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Asst Insp Msebele.
“As police, we urge members of the public to desist from swimming pools, especially under the influence of alcohol as they risk drowning. Parents and guardians are also urged to always monitor children under their care to avoid unnecessary loss of life.”
The deceased’s mother, Ms Sichasisile Nkomo (42) was still shocked about the incident.
“I am still in a state of shock following what happened to my daughter. My daughter left home for work and the next thing I received was the news that she drowned,” she said.
“Her brother whom she had gone with said they attended the birthday party and everything was going well until my daughter decided to jump into the deep end of the pool.”
Ms Nkomo said her son, who had accompanied her sister, is the one who tried to rescue her daughter.
