Black Fin brings unique hip-hop style

Entertainment Reporter
Hip-hop musician Black Fin has brought unique style to the genre through a cultural fusion on his new mix-tape titled “Hokoyo”. The musician whose real name is Tanaka Chiriga is based in the United States and used his exposure to the international scene and Zimbabwean background to come up with the unique style.

The music combines elements of Shona culture mashed against hip-hop in a seamless fashion

“Hokoyo” brings Zimbabwean-inspired stories to listeners sonically and visually (through videos).

Through world class sound and animation music videos, in addition to a cutting edge interactive web experience, Black Fin has stormed the hip-hop scene in a special way. Chiriga incarnated himself as Black Fin after over a decade of performing under a range of pseudonyms. He said he is still experimenting with various other fusions to give more variations to his style.

“Black Fin is still in the process of fully forming as different elements are constantly being added to the mix.

“Black Fin first emerged in 2013 after many years of artistic expression throughout many different mediums and genres,” he said.

The musician said Black Fin “represents a state of mind, one in which the sounds and the multiple styles explored define how audiences relate to the name.”

He said the meaning of Black Fin is captured through the music and graphic elements and shifts continuously to inspire and captivate the imagination.

“There comes a moment in everyone’s life when they ask themselves what it is that they can contribute to society whether positive or negative. “As human beings we communicate with each other because it’s a necessity for survival, many cultural revolutions began with a simple choice to make a voice heard and that is the driving force behind Black Fin.”

Black Fin said he is planning to hold shows in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He will be working with his brother who is based in South Africa.

“We are currently in the process of planning the onstage debut for Black Fin. A new set of music is currently being crafted that will be the base along with the ‘Hokoyo’ classics for shows in South Africa and Zimbabwe this year.”

He said the music has been received well and they have received rave reviews from blogs and publications, especially in the United States.

“We have been received very well and are thankful for the positive response. ‘Hokoyo’ is a well-crafted, well executed production that pushes the boundaries and gives hip-hop fans what they want.”

With regards to the Zimbabwean hip-hop scene, Black Fin said there is immense talent in the country and artistes should connect to take their potential to another level.

“Zimbabwean hip hop is in a great place. There are lots of talented emcees who bring the house down. We need to connect and bridge our talents to create a path to the greatest exposure and level of expertise we demand of our entertainment.”
