Four people burnt beyond recognition

with another car and caught fire on Saturday night near Mungate Business Centre in Domboshava.
Yesterday morning, a relative that had come from Murape Village to attend a funeral at Mungate Village, where two of the victims stayed, reportedly collapsed and died when approaching the homestead.
Police preferred to keep the names of the victims under wraps until all the victims’ identities were established.
Among the victims was the VW driver who was travelling with his six-year-old son together with two other friends whose identities could not be established.
When The Herald arrived at the scene yesterday morning, human bones could be seen on the wreckage of the VW Polo.
The other vehicle, a double cab truck, had already been removed.
Mr Lovemore Ngozo who stays near the accident scene said he woke up around 11pm to find the car engulfed in flames.
Mr Ngozo said the VW Polo that was on its way from Mverechena Business Centre collided with a double cab vehicle that was coming from the other direction before the smaller car caught fire.
“I heard a busting sound and I woke up to find out. When I got to the gate, I saw the vehicle burning and the four people were still in the car. We tried to put out the fire with buckets of water without success. The Fire Brigade came sometime later, but the people had already died.
“Bones were taken from the scene and we could not tell or identify the victims.
“It is only that we knew the car owner as someone who stays in this village,” said Mr Ngozo.
Sources said the driver of the double cab truck was injured and taken to Makumbe Mission Hospital.
Another man who was at the scene said “The people who were in the VW Polo died because they could not open the doors.”
Acting national traffic spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the accident saying the driver of the double cab vehicle was injured and taken to hospital.
Assistant Insp Chakanza said it was too early for him to name the victims now.
“The accident occurred along the Harare/Domboshawa Road at night and four people who were in a VW Polo died while the driver of a double cab truck was injured and rushed to Makumbe Hospital.
“Investigations are still in progress and we will be in a position to disclose the names tomorrow (Monday),” he said.
A bid to get a comment from the bereaved family at Mungate Village failed after an elderly relative refused to talk and asked the journalists to leave.
“We are still in a state of shock and we cannot speak to the Press.
“We need some space and may you kindly leave us for now,” said the man.
