THE exercise to end lawlessness at bus termini, ranks and on the streets in Mutare has seen 57 touts being rounded up for various offences across the city after law enforcement agents swooped into action yesterday.

This follows awareness campaigns held yesterday by the Joint Operations Command (JOC), comprising Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe National Army and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, in Sakubva and the city centre to sensitise touts, vendors and the general public on the need to uphold law and order when conducting their daily business.

Most busy public spaces in the city had been turned into jungles of lawlessness by the marauding felons who were harassing travelers and commuters as well as terrorising vendors.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrests, saying law enforcement agents are on top of the situation.

“Since carrying out the awareness campaign yesterday, our teams immediately went onto the ground and made 57 arrests. We want to keep sufficient pressure on the culprits until the situation is contained. As law enforcement agents, we warn the public against lawlessness and urge citizens to report to their nearest police station and activities that compromise their safety and security,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka added that the blitzkrieg is an ongoing exercise until normalcy returns to the city.
