CAR enthusiasts and fun lovers are in for a treat on August 12 when the Selekta Base Blowout Festival hosts a unique Heroes Day celebration at the Borrowdale Racecourse.

The festival has become popular in recent years.

This special edition will honour the country’s liberation war heroes and heroines.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Entertainment, event coordinator Miss Kundai Mnangagwa said the Blowout Festival was the perfect way for young people to celebrate Heroes Day.

“As Zimbabwean youths, we also want to pay homage to our heroes and heroines through burnouts, a sport that has grown significantly over the years,” she said.

“We invite everyone to join us on Heroes Day as we celebrate car culture, music and lifestyle in honour of those who fought for our freedom.

“This is a family-friendly event, so we have ensured there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Burnouts, now officially recognised as a sport by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), have gained immense popularity throughout Southern Africa and beyond.

This high-octane car culture spectacle involves drivers and co-pilots executing thrilling drifting and burnout manoeuvres within a confined space.

It is basically an adrenaline junkie’s paradise, with roars of powerful engines and burning rubber creating clouds of smoke while loud cheers from the crowd add to the electric atmosphere.

The upcoming event will showcase some of Zimbabwe’s top spinners, alongside their South African counterparts. While the focus is on the thrilling burnout performances, the festival will also feature live music from popular artistes like Killer T, Bagga, Young Gemini, Jason Le Roux, DJ Rax and DJ Springer.

Heroes Day is celebrated to remember the sacrifices made by the gallant sons and daughters of the country, both fallen and living, in bringing Zimbabwe’s independence.

The Defence Forces Day honours the efforts of the country’s security forces in maintaining peace and defending the country’s territorial integrity.
