BMX national team named

World number one in the girls’ Under-9 and boys’ Under-10 categories, Tyla-Shae Donaldson and Tayne Turnock are part of the team that was announced yesterday.

The Zimbabwe BMX Association used last year’s national competitions held in Bulawayo and Harare to select riders for national team.

The riders will represent Zimbabwe at the World Championships set for New Zealand in July.

“Since last year we have been holding National Championships on the same day as recommended by the world body to have competitions of this magnitude held concurrently worldwide. We used points combined points from all last year’s competitions to select our national team,” said Andrew Donaldson, the Zimbabwe BMX Association president.

The national team players will also represent the country at the Africa Challenge and Regional Championships set for April and November in South Africa.

Greame Du Plooy ranked sixth in the world’s Under-8 boys, Hana Taylor fourth in girls’ Under-8, world’s third rider in the Under-11 boys Matt Denslow are part of the Zimbabwean team.

Other world plate holders in the squad are double world plate holder Tafi Mashingaidze who will compete in the open category, Kistern Du-Plooy (girls Under-11), Tayne Turnock and Kurt Rietz.

Mashingaidze is also the national team coach.

Donaldson said the riders will start their preparations for the competitions with a tournament set for Bulawayo at the end of the month.

“Zimbabwe has been dominating in junior categories because our riders start at a tender age compared to other countries. Before the World Championships in New Zealand our riders are going to participate at the South African National Championships as part of their preparations,” said Donaldson.

The competition set for Busters Sports Club in Bulawayo will mark the beginning of the 2013 season.
