Bobby gets bail

He is one of three people arrested in connection with alleged tender irregularities in the building of the R1-billion Mbombela Stadium ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
Despite the irate crowd gathered outside the court, holding placards reading “Dubulu u Bobby” (Shoot Bobby), Amakhosi’s football manager looked unconcerned in court, and greeted and shook hands with people before the magistrate arrived.
In a prepared affidavit, Motaung told the court he has assets worth R14-million, cars worth R4-million and three children.
He added that his monthly salary is R100 000, and he has no prior convictions or pending cases.
He said he will not interfere with the investigation, and offered R50 000 bail (half his monthly salary).
The state mentioned a link between the fraud and the murder of Mbombela municipality speaker Jimmy Mohlala, who blew the whistle on the alleged corruption.
The defence said the connection was “sensationalist”, and the state said it would leave that aspect of the case for the trial.
State prosecutors did not oppose bail, and Motaung was not asked to hand in his passport or report to a police station.
Motaung and his co-accused Herbert Theledi were granted R50 000 bail each. The third accused, who is to be transported from Cape Town, was not in court yesterday. The date for discovery of evidence was set for October 15.
Kaizer Chiefs released a statement yesterday following Bobby’s arrest.
A statement on Chiefs’ website read: “The Club has not received any formal confirmation of Bobby Motaung’s arrest and therefore cannot comment on the matter at this time.”
City Press journalist Sizwe sama Yende, who was outside the court, tweeted: “People wearing ANC T-shirts are starting to protest. Dubula u Bobby (shoot Bobby) they chant” and “Who killed Jimmy?’ shouts a placard outside Bobby Motaung & co court”. The Jimmy referred to is Mbombela municipality speaker Jimmy Mohlala, who was shot dead in his Nelspruit house in 2009. — KickOff.
