HARARE Classic defending champion Gideon Teguru is confident that he will successfully defend his title at 7Arts Theatre in Avondale this evening.
The Colcom Gym-based hulk said he is in his best condition and is looking forward to the contest.
“I am waiting for the contest and I am in my best condition better than last year when I took the title. I worked hard for the past three months after I had taken a break after my trip to Dubai.
“I have been everything as instructed by my coach Mugove Muhambi and we are looking forward to the challenge. I am grateful to my coach who has been behind me throughout and I hope we will do well.
“There were some challenges but with the help of Muhambi and some individuals who has backed me, I promise to give back to them by winning,” said Teguru.
The bodybuilder will however, have to contend with some top athletes like South Africa based duo of Nigel “Spartan” Maphosa and Edward “Gearbox” Mutero and others from Zambia and Malawi for the US$2 000 purse.
The Harare Classic has become one of the most sought after contest in the local scene with its in today’s Harare Classic with a contingent of foreign athletes expected to turn up at toady’s contest.
Zimbabwe is slowly becoming a favourite destination for foreign athletes with bodybuilders from Malawi and Zambia set to feature at this year’s Harare Classic edition.
This year’s event will see competition in five different categories which are the men’s open bodybuilding, men’s physique, women’s bikini, men’s fitness and junior men’s bodybuilding.
Tarirai Chirume one of the event organisers said they are happy to be hosting the tournament this year.
“This year’s competition is going to be bigger and also in terms of the venue. We are happy that we managed to get the top prize money as it was a challenge. The stage has some high profile athletes who have been in the game for some time and it will be interesting to see who will win. There was confirmation that our own guys like ‘Spartan’ and ‘Gearbox’ are travelling all the way from South Africa for the event.
“We will have more athletes as the venue is now bigger,” said Chirume.
Last year’s edition saw Teguru winning the senior men bodybuilding contest while the women’s bikini title went to Gweru bodybuilder Yeukai Midzi.
Joselu Luquembo won the men’s physique, Beloved George won the men’s fitness, Denzel Ngwerume won the junior men bodybuilding and Martha Flavour Ngoma conquered in the women fitness class.
