THE annual Black Opal Face of Zimbabwe (BOFOZ) competition has this year received an overwhelming response with organisers raking in over 50 entries per month as women vie for the $8,000 prize money.
The show is expected to be bigger than last year’s as Jamaican musician Romain Virgo of the Soul Provider fame headlines the event at Harare’s Glamis Arena on September 17.
The winner will be drawn from 12 finalists while one lucky voter stands a chance to win a car.
The winner of the car will be chosen from the SMS voting system.
BOFOZ spokesperson Tanaka Ngorora said they were waiting for the May judges’ choices to be voted for before they choose the top 12.
“We got more than 50 entries per month from all around the country and selected between six to nine contestants per month and from these, we’ll get our top 12 who will battle it out for the $8,000 prize money,” said Ngorora.
He said preparations for the finals were well underway with three build up shows on the cards.
“The preps are heating up as Romain Virgo, courtesy of Chipaz Promotions, has confirmed that he’s coming for the show. When we confirm the Zimdancehall artistes who’re participating, we shall have three build up shows around the country to raise awareness of BOFOZ,” said Ngorora.
Over 15,000 people, he said, are expected to attend the event.
“We want to market Black Opal to more people in Zimbabwe and Zimdancehall has the following we can use. Using the Glamis Arena as the venue shows that the brand is growing,” said Ngorora.
The competition was last year won by Cynthia Mafume who walked away with $8,000.
