A BOGUS clearing agent, who was  duping car dealers at Beitbridge Border Post, has been arrested.

He was dragged to court charged with fraud. Loyd Mawadze, of Dulibadzimu Beitbridge, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova.

The complainant is Washington Ncube, a car dealer at Enterprise Car Sales.

The court heard that on July 22 2023, Ncube approached Mawadze to clear his Toyota Double Cab truck which he had bought in South Africa.

Mawadze charged Ncube US$5500 for the clearing service.

Ncube paid the money via a bank transfer using First Capital Bank into the ZIMRA Account 0200257889 registered in the name of Ordarary Investments (Pvt) Ltd.

Mawadze allegedly supplied Ncube with clearance certificates and advised him to proceed to Beitbridge Border Post for further clearance procedures.

He found out that his money had been used to clear a Mazda CX5 and the tendered certificate was fake.

Ncube made efforts to reach out to Mawadze but he fled to South Africa.

This prompted Ncube to file a police report and it led to the arrest of Sibinginkosi Mpofu, who then implicated Mawadze.

Nothing was recovered.

Rufaro Chonzi appeared for the State.
