The incident occurred early this month in the border town.
The man who purported to be Peter Moyo, son of the late musician, Tongai Moyo, approached Mr Cephas Boy Ngulube, who used to own the now defunct Dynamic Brothers of Beitbridge and told him that he was in need of R2 000 to clear a motor vehicle for his band at Beitbridge Border Post.
The man said he had run out of cash.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said the unsuspecting Mr Ngulube who believed the alleged fraudster was really the son of Tongai Moyo gave him the R2 000.
He said the man had produced a poster with his photo and an inscription Young Igwee-e Peter Moyo and Utakataka Express, Back by Public Demand!!!
Mr Ngulube was with his son at home when the accused approached him for financial assistance and was given the money and Mr Ngulube’s son to accompany him to the border.
The police spokesperson said while on the way to the border, the accused pretended that he had left his file at Mr Ngulube’s place and asked the son to return to their home and bring the file.
On his return, Mr Ngulube’s son could no longer locate the man.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said police in the province had launched a manhunt for the accused.
He said they were appealing to members of the public with information that might lead to the arrest of the accused person.
Those with information concerning the accused person may contact the Investigating Officer Detective Constable Musiiwa on 0772 988 588 or 0286-22090 or any nearest police station.
