IT was a big day at Lord Malvern School in Harare as Zimpapers helped relaunch the institution’s once vibrant media club nearly a fortnight ago.
This is part of Zimpapers’ corporate social responsibility drive, which is aimed at promoting a culture of ethical journalism in schools.
Several learners took part in the event, which enlightened them on issues to do with writing for newspapers and online platforms, as well as broadcasting. Differences between the print and online media were spelt out for them.
The learners also went through some career guidance.
One of the main advantages of online media, according to one of the presenters, is being able to share information with immediacy.
There was also an opportunity to learn about the Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN)’s operations. The station is available on DStv channel 294.
The Zimpapers officials also talked about their green-up campaign, which is currently being promoted through The Sunday Mail Society. They donated eucalyptus trees to the school.
A number of learners, with the help of Mr Itayi Musengeyi (Suburban editor) and Mrs Pauline Matanda (communications and public relations manager) planted a tree.
Mr Musengeyi named the tree “Kwayedza Dzidza”.
The learners showed interest in joining and working diligently in the media club.
The training came in handy as it created a clear path for the resurrection of the school’s media club. Learners now feel eager to produce more news.
It is now easier for learners to pursue a career in journalism through the guidelines we got and the platforms that have been made available to us.
Ruvarashe Tembo and Divine Sigudu are Form Three and Six learners, respectively, at Lord Malvern School.
