As the year draws to an end, the Zimbabwe Boran Breeders Society (ZBBS) is gearing up for the second Boran, Heifer, Bull and Fatstock Show, an event designed for cattle enthusiasts and butchers alike.
The show is scheduled for December 4, 2024, at C.C. Sales in Mt Hampden.
It will commence at 9 am, providing an opportunity for buyers to secure high-quality Boran cattle just in time for the festive season.
The inaugural event in 2023, which featured esteemed American livestock judge Mr. P.J Budler, set a high standard, showcasing the Boran breed’s compatibility with Zimbabwe’s diverse beef production systems.
“The Boran on offer was of a very high standard,” Mr Budler noted last year. “They all look adapted, functional cattle that were hormonally balanced and easy fleshing.”
This year, producers are eager to present their best cattle, ready for market and poised to impress.
The show promises a diverse selection of livestock, including six bulls known for their robust genetic traits and superior health, ideal for both breeding and fatstock production.
In addition, attendees will find 57 fatstock steers, classified as top-quality young supper grade Boran, as well as 80 heifers ranging from commercial to stud quality.
“This year’s selection will be unmatched,” ZBBS spokesperson Mr Collen Tafireyi stated. “Whether you’re a seasoned breeder or just starting, there’s something for everyone.
“As the Boran breed grows in popularity among Zimbabwean cattle farmers, the ZBBS has organised expert presentations to further educate attendees.”
Noteworthy discussions will include “Preparing Your Cows for Breeding” by William Augustyn from Fivet and a session titled “Bulk in Boran? Feedlot Experiences from Zimbabwe and South Africa,” featuring insights from seasoned Boran farmers Messers Mark Hook and Colin Langton.
These sessions will equip farmers with the knowledge needed to optimise their breeding practices and improve livestock management.
Adding excitement to the day will be the highly anticipated Fatstock Competition, where animals will be judged based on various categories, including milk tooth, 2 tooth, 4 tooth, and 6 tooth.
The championship will recognise the best performers, with awards for both the Champion Steers and Reserve Champions.
This competition is not only a showcase of quality but also a celebration of the skills and dedication of Boran farmers.
“Events like these are crucial for our industry,” said Mr Tafireyi. “They provide a platform for farmers to network, share experiences, and learn from one another, which ultimately strengthens the entire cattle farming community in Zimbabwe.”
