Monomotapa in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Barbourfields yesterday.
Opportunity after opportunity came and went begging as Highlanders players either shot wide or skied their efforts.
Bruce Kangwa, who was probably the most wasteful of the lot, had the opportunity to open the scoring for the former league champions in the 14th minute.
Knox Mutizwa dispossessed Morgan Mugombe who got the ball from goalkeeper Tapiwa Mafunga and sent a cross to Kangwa.
With only the goalkeeper to beat Kangwa miskicked and sent the ball wide much to the disappointment of the few highlanders faithfuls.
In the 28th minute Honest Moyo found Mutizwa in the box but the young player blasted the ball over the bar.
In the 33rd minute Highlanders were awarded a freekick outside the Monomotapa box after Xolani Ncube was fouled by Tendai Ngulube.
Gilbert Banda took the responsibility of taking the shot and it passed in front of the goalmouth.
Monomotapa did not have any shots that bothered goalkeeper Arial Sibanda in the first half as Highlanders pressed on.
The second half was as dreary as the first with only a few attempts at goal by both teams.
In the 53rd minute Rahman Kutsanzira was picked out unmarked in the box by Tendai Ndlovu and all he had to do was shoot into the net.
He rushed his effort and it went towards the heavens.
Three minutes later Ncube headed wide from a Kutsanzira cross as they tried to pile on pressure on the visitors.
Monomotapa had probably their best test of the Highlanders defence when Brian Mapfumo was left unmarked just outside the Bosso box.
His blistering shot at goal was well take by Sibanda who was always alert.
In the 81st minute Highlanders were handed another chance to score when referee Sungano Makwangudze awarded them a free kick outside their box.
This time it was Tendai Ndlovu who opted to take up the responsibility and his hard hit shot had to be pushed out by a diving Mafunga.
The resultant corner yielded nothing for Highlanders who seemed desperate to score.
Monomotapa assistant coach Nkululeko Dlamini said he was happy with the result though not with the performance.
