Boxing fest set for Kwekwe

GOLDEN Mile Hotel in Kwekwe will tomorrow play host to a boxing tournament that serves as a trial for the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 team.

Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) president Jim Mpalale said:

“We intend to spread the sport to the younger generation across the country and this time we have brought the sport to the Midlands. We are saying the youths can make a living out of boxing instead of meaningless violence.

“We are expecting not less than 40 bouts translating to about 80 pugilists expected to take part in the tournament. We are yet to match the contestants as yet, but Kwekwe should brace for some top drawer performances.”

One of the promoters Tashinga Mugabe said boxing instils discipline in the youths.

“We want to send a message to the youths that they should not go around murdering each other with machetes like they do in Kwekwe. We also intend to promote the sport at schools and my school (Kenville High School) is actually offering scholarships for students who would have shown potential during the tournament,” said Mugabe.

Golden Mile Hotel general manager Rickie Dabvu said all was set for the tournament.

“It’s a family show that we are inviting families to attend as there will be a lot of entertainment lined up for them. We will have jumping castles for children, with DJs entertaining music lovers,” said Dabvu.
