A 12-year-old boy drowned after he fell into a ditch reportedly dug by a land developer in Warren Park D last Tuesday.

Yusof Chikepe, a Grade 7 pupil, was in the company of four other pupils when the tragedy struck.

Family spokesperson, Nyembesi Chikepe, said Yusof was a talented boy.

“We have lost a brilliant boy,” said Nyembesi.

“He had love for agriculture and was brilliant in school,” she said.

Scores of Warren Park residents came to the scene appealing to the city fathers to close the pits.

“We have been calling for the closing of the pits for some time, but it has all been in vain,” said one of the residents.

“We are losing young lives in circumstances that can be avoided. This is a second incident within six months and it’s so disheartening.

“We monitor our children, but they sneak out and go to that area which is not protected,” said another resident.
