TRAGEDY struck Machona Village in Buhera after a 14-year-old boy drowned in a pool along the Save River.
The incident occurred on August 29 at around 11an, while the boy was visiting his sister.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Tawananyasha Mutausi.
He said the deceased and his friend, Goodluck Khosa went to bath in the river near a pool created by sand excavation works carried out by Greenfuel.
While swimming, the deceased ventured into the deeper part of the pool.
As he attempted to return to the shallow end, he slipped back into the deep water due to unstable sand beneath him.
“Goodluck, who was in the shallow section, saw Tawananyasha struggling and tried to pull him to safety, but was unsuccessful due to his own limited swimming abilities. He alerted nearby villagers, but unfortunately, no one was able to rescue the boy,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
The incident was reported to ZRP Chisumbanje, who contacted the Changadzi sub-aqua unit to retrieve Tawananyasha’s body, which was later transported to St Peter’s Hospital for a post-mortem.
The police are urging the public to exercise caution around water bodies, especially those altered by industrial activity.
