Bra Hugh delays release of collaboration album with Kunonga

South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela is delaying the release of his collaboration album with Victor Kunonga, as he looks to release the Chiwoniso Maraire commemoration project alongside his own solo album.

Prior to her death mbira Chiwoniso was working on a collaborative album with the South African jazz legend and Kunonga in tribute to her late father Dumisani Maraire. Kunonga and Masekela have since recruited four women, Prudence Katomeni Mbofana, Benita Tarupiwa, Joyce Warikwanda and Rumbidzai Tavaziva to spearhead the project.

In January, Masekela told B-Metro that they were looking at an Easter release for the album.

a?The album I am doing with Victor is done and we are now just mastering it to make sure that the final product matches the effort that was put into its making.A We are looking at releasing it sometime around Easter,a? he said.

In an interview Kunonga said that Masekela, the albumas executive producer, had decided it would be better to launch the album at the same time as his.

a?The only issue we have now is that Bra Hugh put a hold on its release because he wants to release it at the same time as his own album. At the moment we have no concrete release date because all of that is subject to the decision of the executive producer,a? he said.

Kunonga said that although no date had been set yet, they were in constant discussion with Masekela to find out when he would be done with his own album, thus paving the way for the release of the Shai Shai project.

Kunonga added that the decision to release both albums at once meant that the album would in all likelihood be launched in South Africa first before it made its debut in Zimbabwe.

a?I guess it will have to be launched in South Africa now because Bra Hugh will want to launch his album there. We will try to find a perfect synergy for the release of the album both in Zimbabwe and South Africa,a? he said.
