Seven people died while five others were seriously injured in an accident when a Honda Fit collided head on with a Mazda pick-up truck today along the Gweru-Kwekwe Highway.

The accident occurred at around 5.30 am when a Gweru bound Honda Fit with six people on board collided head on with a Mazda B 2200 truck which was also carrying six people at the 223 km peg along the Gweru-Kwekwe highway.

Six people died on the spot while the other died upon admission at Kwekwe District Hospital where five other injured passengers were taken for treatment.

A police source who attended the scene said that on approaching the 223 km peg near Kwekwe River, the driver of the Honda Fit failed to negotiate a curve and encroached into the right lane resulting in the head on collision.

The source said the Honda Fit veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times before landing on its wheels while the Madza B 2200 truck also veered off the road as a result of the collision.

Both drivers died on the spot.

“The driver of the Honda Fit is said to have failed to negotiate a curve and encroached into the right lane ahead on an oncoming Madza B 2200 truck and the two collided head on. Six people died on the spot while the other died upon admission at Kwekwe District Hospital. Five people were also injured and were taken to the same hospital,” said the source.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kwekwe District Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem. The names of the victims have not been released as their next of kin are yet to be informed.

Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Joel Goko referred this reporter to National Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi for confirmation.

“You have to get hold of our national spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi for confirmation,” he said.

Chief Superintendent Nyathi was however not picking up his phone by the time of publication.
