A VIOLENT storm tore through Makhado police post on Monday, leaving officers homeless and the station buildings badly damaged.
The storm, which raged for several hours, ripped off roofs and destroyed property at the outpost located about 80km along the Beitbridge–Bulawayo highway in Matabeleland South.

The Makhado police post plays a crucial role in policing resettlement and rural areas straddling the Gwanda and Beitbridge districts, as well as responding to accidents and crimes along the busy highway.
Confirming the incident, Beitbridge district police chief, Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, said although there were no injuries, the damage was extensive.

“We have received a report about that incident where the police quarters were affected by a strong storm early today. However, none of our officers were injured. The worst affected buildings are the police houses and we are now working on an emergency plan to address accommodation issues,” he said.

The storm left a trail of destruction across the area, uprooting trees and damaging infrastructure as residents and officers alike scrambled for safety.
Efforts are now underway to secure temporary shelter for affected officers while repairs are being organised.
