MASVINGO-BASED Junior High School recently hosted a highly successful walkathon, as part of a campaign to boost breast cancer awareness, with survivors giving powerful testimonies of their struggles.
The walkathon was held under the theme, “Walk for a Cause: Together Against Breast Cancer.”
The event drew a number of students, parents, teachers and community members who came together to show their solidarity in the fight against breast cancer.
The walkathon featured keynote speeches from health officials, including the District Medical Officer, who was represented by Sister Zindove, Masvingo City Council health officials and several survivors.
“Breast cancer is a major public health concern and events like this walkathon are crucial in raising awareness and promoting early detection.
“I commend Junior High School for taking the lead in this initiative.
“Educating our youth about breast cancer is essential in the fight against this disease,” said Sister Zindove.
She added:
“It’s heartening to see young people taking an interest in breast cancer awareness. Early detection is key and, by educating themselves and their loved ones, they can make a significant difference.”
“I wish this could be done yearly because it passes a strong message to those with the condition that they have our full support.”
The event also featured powerful testimonies from breast cancer survivors.
One of the survivors, Edna Mugehu, encouraged students to remain steadfast in their commitment to fight breast cancer.
“Young people, you have the power to make a difference. Study hard, pursue careers in medicine and research and together, we can find a cure,” Mugeu said. As survivors, we are living proof that breast cancer is not a death sentence. With courage, determination, and support, we can overcome it.”
