Bribe-taking police officers to perform community service

The Chinhoyi Magistrates Court has sentenced two Zimbabwe Republic Police officers to 490 hours of community service for taking bribes from motorists.

Desire Mangombe (30) and Macdonald Tapesa (32), both traffic officers, were facing charges of contravening Section 174(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23]
The duo was demanding a weekly bribe of US$60 from transport operators to ensure easy passage at a roadblock.

The court heard that from January 2022, the two officers were taking bribes from Tafadzwa Bvunzawabaya, a manager at Wolfspack Transport Service.

A team from Police Headquarters set a trap for the two on September 15, 2022, and they were arrested after accepting marked US dollar notes.
