A MUTARE woman last week dragged her ex-husband to court for failing to take care of their six-year-old child.Eunice Zingowo described John Chekure as a famous businessman who seems not to have his child at heart.

She was demanding $300 for the child’s upkeep.

Mr Poterai Gwezhira heard the matter.

Zingowo told the court that she has been struggling to take care of their child alone when the father is making a lot of money in his timber and truck business.

“He is a contractor who sells timber. He also owns a truck which operates in Tanzania and South Africa, making a lot of money. I used to be into buying and selling, but I stopped when I went to school where I recently graduated, so things are not quite well for me.

“I am yet to secure a job, but I need held so that the child gets school fees, clothes and food among other basics. His father owns three cars and there is nothing that can stop him from taking care of this child,” said Zingowo.

She added that she was aware that her ex-husband had four other children and a wife to take care of, but he should not forget his other child.

However, Chikure told the court that he was broke and was retrenched from the company that he used to work for.

“Things are not quite well for me Your Worship. I have never been a contractor as she has cited and I have never owned a truck in my life. In fact, I have been retrenched from work and I am using the small car that I own as a pirate taxi.

“I get between $180 and $250 per month and it is not even enough for the big family that I have. I have five other children and a wife to take care of. The truck that she is talking about is only a Mazda pickup which is now grounded as we speak,” said Chikure.

He offered to pay $40 per month. Chikure added that he was failing to settle some of the debts he had accrued over the years and the mother of his child should bear with him. Mr Gwezhira ordered Chikure to pay $60 as monthly maintenance for the minor child.
