Broken down train triggers chaos

There was traffic mayhem on Tuesday at Grasslands near Marondera when a passenger train experienced an engine failure and broke down right on the level crossing.

Motorists travelling to and from Harare were stuck for at least two hours, while those proceeding to Harare had to use an alternative route which goes via Chitungwiza.

A rescue locomotive was dispatched from Harare and only cleared the level crossing almost two hours later.

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) public relations manager Mr Nyasha Maravanyika confirmed the incident, saying the Harare-bound passenger train experienced a failure at the level crossing.

“That train was coming from Mutare to Harare,” he said. “It is a passenger train. The issue is that our locomotive experienced a failure right on the rail crossing in Marondera. This happened around 4am and by 6.35am our rescue team from Harare brought another locomotive to clear the road and rail crossing.” — Herald Reporter.
