A NYANGA woman is living to regret the decision to entrust her brother with safekeeping her savings amounting to US$1 000 after he converted the money to his own use.
This emerged at a hearing at Nyanga Magistrates’ Court where Novas Kaseke (24) appeared before magistrate, Ms Notebulgar Muchineripi, facing charges of theft of trust property as outlined in Section 113(2)(d) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] after he failed to account for US$640 of the money given to him by his sister, Lizzy Thomas (30).
Kaseke was not represented and pleaded guilty to the offence.
Ms Muchineripi sentenced him to 18 months in jail, before suspending six months on condition of good behaviour for the next five years.
A further six months were set aside on condition that Kaseke restitute US$640 to his sister by May 30, 2026.
The remaining six months were suspended on condition that he performs 210 hours of community service at ZRP Nyanga Police Station.
Prosecutor, Nyasha Sesenyai, said: “The accused and complainant are brother and sister. On April 10, at Nyamhuka 1, the accused person was given cash amounting to US$1 000 by the complainant for safekeeping.
“The accused person did not return the money and converted the cash to his own use. The total value stolen is US$1 000 and recovered is US$360. The accused person had no lawful right to act in the manner he did.”
