TWO Chikanga brothers betrayed the trust bestowed on them by their employer and stole $1 700. Maxwell and Blessing Muchimwe has since appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, facing theft charges as defined in Section 113 of The Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Mr Fletcher Karombe appeared for the State.
Mr Karombe said on February 16 and at Number 2770, Chikanga, Maxwell Muchimwe, was given $1 700 by Evans Munyaradzi to buy timber for resale, but converted the money into his own use.
“At around 9am, Maxwell was given $1 700 by Munyaradzi to buy timber for resale, but Muchimwe disappeared with the money.
“When Munyaradzi discovered that Maxwell was nowhere to be seen, he lodged a police report leading to his arrest,” he said.
Mr Karombe said only $420 was recovered from Maxwell when he was arrested.
However, Blessing denied the allegations, saying his elder brother left $100 in his house without his knowledge, only to be alerted when the police officers came to arrest him.
“My brother left part of the money in my house while I was away. I was only told when he came home in the company of the police officers,” said Blessing.
Maxwell pleaded guilty to the theft charges and when asked to explain why he had committed the offence, he pleaded for leniency.
Muchimwe said: “I erred Your Worship. Please forgive me. I used the money to buy groceries and tyres from South Africa.”
Mrs Chiundura remanded him in custody waiting for sentence, while Blessing was remanded out of custody awaiting trial on March 9.
