Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has launched the Budiriro Vocational Training Centre in partnership with Fortune Construction to provide residents with the skills they need to secure employment and contribute to the city’s development.
The revitalisation of the Budiriro Centre is a critical part of Harare’s strategy to tackle youth unemployment and equip the next generation with practical skills.
At the event, Councillor Mafume said vocational training was a means to foster economic growth as it reduces dependence on traditional academic paths.
“The vocational training centre will create employment for the youths through equipping them with handcraft skills,” he said.
Councillor Mafume said such training not only provides jobs but also equips young people with tools to better their lives and communities.
He also said there is need for continued partnerships between the public and private sectors.
“It is very important for us to continue engaging with the private sector to enhance the quality of being in Harare,” Councillor Mafume said.
He said vocational training centres like the one in Budiriro provid a viable alternative for young people to channel their energy into building careers and contributing to the economy, instead of engaging in destructive behaviour.
“We are currently engaged in a battle with drug and substance abuse. We need our youths to move away from drugs and focus on economic growth.”
Budiriro Vocational Training Centre will offer a wide range of courses, including plumbing, welding, carpentry, baking and leather making.
The programmes are designed to meet the modern demands of the workforce and prepare young people for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
