The National Arts Merit Awards (Namas) held in Harare at the weekend was a night to remember, bringing together Zimbabwe’s finest talents in the arts industry. While the spotlight shone on the stage, one person who made a lasting impression from behind the scenes was Bulawayo-based makeup artist (MUA), Progress Manduna.

Manduna, known for working with top local celebrities like musician Sandra Ndebele-Sibindi, social media influencers Lorraine Guyo, Madam Boss and Mai Titi, fashion designer Zana Kay and Zambian media personality Mutale Mwanza, was responsible for the stunning makeup looks of the event’s hosts, dancers and performers.

Her artistry was breath-taking, with meticulous attention to detail evident in every face she transformed.

The event’s theme, Afrofuturism, was flawlessly captured through Manduna’s creative use of gold shimmer and glitter, symbolising a radiant future. From full glam to soft glam looks, she went all out to bring the Afro-futuristic vision to life.

In total, she worked on 15 individuals, including the event’s hosts Charlene Mangweni-Furusa and Nabeelah Jogee, as well as saxophonist Denilson and musicians Delroy Shewe and Probeatz.

Reflecting on her experience, Manduna expressed deep appreciation for the chance to be part of the Namas:

“I’d love to thank the people who sent me the flier stating that Nama was in search of talented makeup artists to showcase their skills for the event,” she said.

She described her experience working with creatives as truly inspiring.

“Working with creatives is always an enriching experience, bringing fresh perspectives and unique ideas to the table. The passion and energy surrounding the event fuelled my speed as I worked on the dancers, co-hosts and musicians. I had just three hours to complete artistic and glam makeup for 15 faces before the Nama event began.”

When asked how she felt seeing her handiwork on stage, Manduna could not hide her pride.

“I’d be lying if I say I wasn’t proud of my work, having done makeup for people performing on stage and standing for many hours. It was overwhelming and made me so happy.”

Manduna’s exceptional skills and attention to detail have earned her a reputation as one of the best make-up artists in the country. —@MbuleloMpofu
