adminLast month the club held a Winter Blitz Chess Tournament at Zedco which was won by Thabang Moyo who beat medical practitioner Ricky Malaba in the final.
Tomorrow’s competition is expected to attract a bigger field compared to 105 which included 25 women who took part in last month’s tournament. Bulawayo Polytechnic student Busi Ncube came first in the women’s category with Modester Dube being the runner-up.
The spokesman for the Bulawayo Chess Club Moses Mutipforo said they are impressed with the support that they are getting.
“If you look, we haven’t had any chess activities in the city yet Bulawayo used to be one of the best in terms of chess.
“As Bulawayo Chess Club, what we want is to revive the sport and we are happy that people are coming on board to help us resuscitate the game and the association.
“The Sport and Recreation Commission does not recognise a club and that is why we want to bring chess stakeholders together and map the way forward so that our association is registered with the supreme sports body.
“Every month we have a tournament as a build up to our December Matabeleland Open Chess Championships.
“For our monthly competitions, we are inviting all the city chess players to come in their numbers and be part of this revival. We also want schools and women to participate in the competitions” said Mutipforo.
The Bulawayo Chess Club has been in existence for five months and they are based at Kingdom Building.
They have held the Independence tournament which had 25 people and was won by Ronald Chimhanzi, Castro Sibanda won Africa Day competition which had 50 participants.
For the weekend tournament, school children in uniform will pay $2 with others paying $5. There will be consolation prizes for school participants as well as female players.
Moyo, Malaba, veteran Ntokozo Mangena, Chimhanzi, Sibanda and Russel Dzete are some of the top players to watch tomorrow.
