BULAWAYO Children’s Choir has reimagined Mathias Xavier’s classic Tormented Soul in a heartfelt rendition titled “Awu Yeiye (The Refix) – Ode to Our Musical Heroes”, which is set for release this Friday.

Choir director Trevor Mawaka said the project is about preserving the memory of musicians who contributed immensely to the nation’s cultural heritage.

“It seems we often forget that musicians, like other public figures, are heroes in their own right. This song is our way of honouring them and ensuring their names remain on people’s lips,” said Mawaka.

“We’re also building a new audience while paying tribute to these legends. Visuals for the track will be released soon.”

The soulful ode name-drops some of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated and dearly missed artistes, including Nduna “Ndux Malax” Malaba, Sam Mtukudzi, Calvin “Cal_Vin” Nhliziyo, Solomon ‘Jah Solo’ Skuza, John Chibadura, Donovan ‘Don’ Gumbo, James Chimombe, Oliver Mtukudzi, System Tazvida, Mzalabantu ‘Fanyana’ Dube, Chiwoniso Maraire, and Takunda ‘Taku’ Mafika.

During the liberation struggle, songs by Zex Manatsa, Thomas Mapfumo, and Cde Chinx Chingaira were powerful tools of motivation and mobilisation for freedom fighters. Now, decades later, the Bulawayo Children’s Choir is carrying that torch, using music to honour the past while shaping the future. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
