adminBulawayo City Council has relaxed its notorious water rationing regime following the above-average rainfall received in the perennially dry southern parts of the country last season.
The city is sitting on a 30-month water reserve, according to the Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo. Under the new rationing guidelines, each household in a high density suburb is now permitted to use at least 450 litres per day, up from 350 litres.
Households in low density suburbs are also now free to each draw daily supplies of 750 litres, an increase from 500 litres.
“We had good rains last season. Right now, we have more than 30 months’ supply of water. Therefore, we are not under any pressure on the supply side,” said Councillor Moyo.
In 2012, Bulawayo City Council scored a first when it ordered residents to simultaneously flush their toilets at 7.30pm, as part of an official attempt to prevent blocked sewage pipes.
The “Big Flush”, touted as a global phenomenon, came as the city experienced 72-hour water-cuts.
